Many things can cause wall receptacles to malfunction, such as age or dirt buildup. However, receptacles can also become inoperable altogether. If you notice the following signs, your receptacle is probably faulty.
An electrician should inspect any electrical receptacles that show these symptoms to determine if they need to be fixed or replaced.
Receptacle Feels Hot
Bad wiring presents a potentially dangerous fire hazard. Deteriorating electric receptacle covers might show scorch marks which indicate there is a serious issue. To safely avoid this hazard, shut off the electricity at the fuse box and schedule an electrician to inspect the receptacle.
The plugs Are Too Loose
Damaged outlet connectors can cause a fire, and they can also be very irritating to use. If your plugs fall out of the receptacle, this indicates a problem. Stop using the receptacle and get it replaced.
Burning Odors, Sparks, and smoke
If sparks, smoke, or unusual odors are coming from the receptacle, it could mean the electrical system is damaged and could start a fire. This is a very serious issue, and you should call an electrician as soon as possible.
Outlet Has Openings For Just Two-Prong Plugs
Three-prong outlets have a third grounding prong, while outlets with only two prongs aren’t grounded. When plugging in or unplugging appliances from outlets that don’t have a ground wire, be wary of electrical shocks. Replace two-prong outlets with three-prong ones to reduce your risk, but it’s important that they are properly grounded.
Discolored or Melted Plastic
Damaged wires or overheated outlets can cause the plastic to melt and discolor. Again, this is very serious and needs the attention of an electrician.
